Re: Chassis B.38.EF. Mr Bernot.
Failure of rear axle gears & shortage
of oil in axle.

We thank you for your BY/Mtn20/N.8.10.35. and note that new 'Perfect' oil seals are being sent to us for this car.

We have now dismantled the rear axle for the purpose of changing the gears.

Upon dismantling same we observed the following :-

1. Gears very badly scored.

2. Steel cage of the GB.1442 (Ransome & Marles) thrust bearing broken in several places.

3. Loss of oil through the o/s axle tube.

4. The oil seals appear to be in a fair condition the o/s oil seal however was in a better condition than the n/s one.

Mr Elliott visited our Rue Gide Workshops yesterday and took notes concerning the oil seals etc. We have observed that the n/s axle shaft has been lightly scored by the leather of the oil seal.

As requested by you we will forward the dismantled seals for your inspection.

Up to the present we have not had any trouble with the earlier type of chassis, viz. those prior to chassis B-87-DK. We are therefore, wondering whether this new type of oil seal is as efficient as the earlier design? We hope that we are not going to experience trouble with the 'perfect' oil seals or premature wear of the axle shaft due to the friction set up by the leather.

The seals were found to have been fitted the correct way round.

VA.
