We carried out a test with three modified forms of liner on the "F" engine the object being to reduce the distortion taking place at the base of the liners and which appears to be intimately connected with partial piston seizure at the cylinder base and cracked blocks. The schemes were as follows :- (1) Three liners were honed with the liners clamped in position in the cylinder block - A stiff base plate taking the place of the crankcase. The block was water heated to 82.2° C. during honing. (2) Three liners had the base flange reduced in dia. to the same radius as the flat portion on standard liners. (3) Three liners had the rubber ring groove raised 1/4" and slightly reduced base flange. (4) The remaining three liners were standard. Standard piston clearance (.015") was used with all liners and standard rings with plain scraper ring at bottom of skirt (Std.). The engine was given a two hours run at 9/10ths. rated H.P. i.e. 432 B.H.P. 2250 R.P.M. and the last five minutes at full throttle. The oil consumption was slightly better than during its previous two hours run. The effect upon distortion was to be judged by the marking on the liners after the run. Normally we observe hard marking and sometimes score marks occurring on a line with the thickened part forming the foot of the liner. Upon examination after the two hours run we should judge No.1 scheme (i.e. liners honed in position) to show the least signs of distation. All three these liners were | ||
