GRAPHITE BRONZE CLUTCH FACINGS.

? 261

Thank you for Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/NRC.{N. R. Chandler}1/MH.{M. Huckerby}19.2.38.

We are aware that there is a slight synchro rattle in this car which was accentuated by the use of the graphite bronze clutch facings, but this rattle is so slight that under normal conditions correction is unnecessary, especially bearing in mind the age of the car and the fact that it is not under guarantee.

We definitely say that replacing the bronze by RAD.11 has improved matters through its slightly smoother pick up, but we are of the opinion that this is an exceptional case and that the average user would have made little or no complaint about this slight judder - in point of fact, if the clutch had been ill-used in the manner in which the normal 3 1/2-litre owner ill-uses this type of clutch, thus giving the faces a chance to bed in correctly, possibly even this slight judder would have disappeared in time.

I have not heard anything from Mr.Dykes since, so presume he is satisfied. Should, however, he complain in the future, I will approach him along the lines suggested in your P.S. regarding the fitting of the modification to the synchro mesh.

Pk/KC.
