re. Engine Bearings.

Thanks for yours Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}2/M13.7.26.

I shall be very pleased to go into the inspection of the bearings thoroughly on the next few engines dismantled.

I also suggest that we should have Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} on this job, as in making various engine investigations lately, he has rather given me the impression that the fit and clearance of the bearings is an important feature.

A recent car, 119-TC, condemned for engine throbs, when dismantled, was found to have .004" clearance in the front bearings, and although one cannot consider this bad, it certainly appeared to improve the throbbing trouble complained of when the clearance was taken up.

I would suggest on such engines as are allocated for inspection purposes that a flow test should be taken on the unit test prior to their being taken off, and when dismantled the measurement of the bearing clearance should be made, as I feel that one might be deceived by the actual appearance of the bearings.
