| TO HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} S E C R E T. E4/MS.4.25. Copy to CI. Copy to BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} 'V' SERIES. 48190 OIL SUMP. Referring to the circular cover on the bottom of the oil sump the spigot formed thereon need not be a fit in the crankcase. It can in fact be .025 clear all round. The only reason for providing a spigot at this point was to make the cover deeper so that it would be stiff enough between the bolts to make a good oil joint on its bolting face. Referring now to the drain plug in this cover we at one time shewed a positive hexagon plug of standard form as given on LeC. 1659. but we believe it was at Derby's request that we fitted the present internal hexagon plug, as this same plug is used in a number of places on the gear-box. We find we cannot make a sufficiently good job of a plug with a large thin hexagon head, and it then becomes a question of retaining the present plug or returning to the one shewn on LeC. 1659. This latter has the possible disadvantage of being more easily damaged and allowing the oil to escape should the bottom of the engine strike the road. E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} | ||
