-4- POINTS TO BE DEALT WITH. ACTION TAKEN. 20. Brake Drums. The offside footbrake drum is scored rather badly. Reply from BY:- The scoring of the 40/50 brake drums is the exception. Complaints previously have been in the direction of glazing, and we feel that under certain conditions now the drums may score, whilst under other conditions they will tend to polish. Personally, I consider that we have the best compromise at present that we have ever had in this connection. I do not propose to make any modification to the brake drums, whilst at the same time we know of no fault in the material of the shoe. 21. Actuating Shaft Leathers. The press button studs on one of these covers pulled out of the leather when dismantling. Reply from BY:- In future supplies a strap will be fixed to replace the press studs which come adrift. 22. Magneto. The gears on the Magneto are distinctly noisy. This Magneto was changed when we had run approximately 7,000 miles of the trial. We consider it should be returned to the Makers with the complaint mentioned. See copy of Wdl/NJ17.1.24, attached marked "C". 23. The spring withdrawing rings on all 6 wheels were loose. It will be recollected that during the test one of these came off and caused great difficulty in removing the wheel. See copy of BY6-F6.12.23, attached marked "D". 24. Water was found inside the rims when the tyres were removed. Apparently this was of no detriment to the tyres during the 23 days, (the period in which the trial took place) but it might be detrimental over a longer period. Water has apparently found its way through at the gap in the split detachable flange. Extract contained in Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}7/NJ3.1.24 from letter from The Dunlop Co. - "We are now experimenting with a few simple devices which would cover not only the slot, but the junction of the ends of the flanges as well, and the writer promises that one of the earliest samples available will be sent to you." 25. Bonnet Fasteners. The offside front bonnet fastener seized in its guide, due to lack of lubrication. There is no mention of lubricating these parts in the Instruction Book. We suggest a few drops for every thousand miles. Reply from BY:- This suggestion will be incorporated in the next edition of the Instruction Book. 26. Petrol Tank. There are signs of rust commencing to appear at the bottom of the tank, almost as though the galvanising is not sufficient protection. Reply from BY:- We have some experiments in hand of double sheet material nickel rolled on steel. Also we are asking our Suppliers to make specially tinned material for us. Contd. | ||
