Proposals and agreements for a new axle design for armoured cars.

| To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Copy to CJ. EY. RE NEW AXLE FOR ARMOURED CARS. I again saw Col. Robinson and Major Lewin at the India Office yesterday, and Col. Hutchinson at the War Office. I shewed them the schemes of the various alternative proposals which had been made, and discussed them with them, with the result that all agree that the original axle, with twin epi-cyclic gears, is the most suitable. While I was there Col. Robinson wrote a letter to the financial department asking them to ask Rolls-Royce to quote for the supply of rear axles to this scheme. So that it remains to finish this design off and send it to Derby to be estimated on. Col. Hutchinson agreed to this arrangement also, but only after a great deal of argument and discussion, during which he made several further suggestions, mostly with a view to using the present axle with alterations, all rather patched up in design, and which he finally agreed were not suitable. Col. Hutchinson still adhered to his contention that the lubrication of the planet wheel bearings is the weak point in an epicyclic gear, and I undertook that special care should be taken with this point. The India Office say the new axle is extremely urgent, as they do not want to send any more armoured cars out to India without it, and some should be out there for the Prince of Wales' visit in October.
