X.53. - RE BENZOL.

We have been using benzol here of one or two qualities, including the Staveley, which we have purchases through the Works. We find that probably due to the sulphur contained in the benzol there is a distinct action on the copper piping and floatchambers, etc. but apparently none on the brass.

This action causes the mechanism to work very harshly and the deposit of oxides of sulphides set free, continually block up the low speed jet.

I think this will be found to be the cause of the petrol filter gauze being eaten away.

I shall be glad if you will watch the result in connection with customers cars, and not be too keen on advising them to use benzol until we are sure that the damage from its use is un-material or non-existent.

Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and Mr. Hall will make careful tests and advise us.

R.{Sir Henry Royce}
