FURTHER TESTS WITH TORQUE CONTROL.

To determine the torsional movement of the axle when jaggering in relation to its normal see position – no friction plates.

We found that the amplitude of the vibration of the axle when jaggering violently was as follows :-

M.P.H. Forward twist. Backward.
20 8 1/2º 14º
30 9º 3º
40 9º 6º

It will be observed that with jaggers even at slow speeds, the axle has to twist through a very considerable angle forwards before this phenomena commences. With increase of road speed, the front twist up alters very little, 9º being apparently about the limit before the wheel skids.

We endeavoured to locate approximately the point about which the axle twists. We did this by using the end of the torque arm to describe an arc when jaggering. We took a second arc described by the fixture on the axle when jaggering. From these two arcs we found that the axle appears to be twisting about a point 3/4" in front of the spring centre line and 1 3/8" above the spring seat.
