Failure of torsion springs on an exhaust silencer cutout and proposing a modification with a tension spring.

We are still awaiting complete evidence of the reason for this but it is probable that they have become softened and weakened by heat. It is also understood that the torsion type of spring is more affected by mud than the tension type. We have therefore shewn the cutout fitted with a tension spring in the most practical manner we can think of. It is possible that this modified spring may survive the standard chassis dynamometer test, whereas it is certain we should have to remove the torsion springs to save them.
