PETROL ALLOWANCE ---------------- With reference to your last application for petrol coupons to cover travelling between Derby, Stone and Wolverhampton, I am anxious that this Department should not become famous for the amount of petrol available to personnel, and would ask you to try and cut down travelling as much as possible. I do not like issuing coupons to cover mileage already undertaken, since this cuts out entirely the function of the petrol control, and should be pleased if you would submit a rough estimate of the proposed journeys, when applying for an allowance. According to a road map, the distances involved are as follows:- Derby-Stone via Uttoxeter - 30 miles Stone-Wolverhampton - 24 " so that the mileage from Derby to Stone and back, and including two journeys from Stone to Wolverhampton, would be about 160 miles, and with a petrol consumption of 28 m.p.g., the fuel required would be 6 gallons. Under these circumstances, your last issue of 20 gallons should last four or five weeks, since unless matters of extreme complexity arise, it should not be necessary for you to return to Derby at all frequently, as Ryc. or myself are visiting Stone or Wolverhampton every week.
