ALUMINIUM BRAKE DRUMS ON CONTINENTAL B.V. Since it appears that the semi-floating rear axle will be used on B.V. Continental, on which it is desired to try aluminium brake drums, it will be necessary to produce details suitable for disc as well as for wire wheels. The same drum cannot be used on both. We suggest that the aluminium brake drum detail for disc wheels can be made from the preliminary print of G.CD.1055, which has been handed to you. This shews aluminium drums for wire wheels, and those for disc wheels are exactly the same except that the back plate and bolt flange is moved outwards to suit the position of the hub flanges for disc wheels. The position of these flanges must not be altered, which will mean there will be a slight increase of track (.280) front and rear, because of the difference in the thickness of the back plates of C.I. and aluminium drums. If it is found that there are objections to the wheel butting against the aluminium drum flange, we can interpose a thin steel plate attached to the drum, but we suggest we should try without first. A detail of these drums is required for transmission to Light Alloys Limited. [Handwritten Note] A.F.M We don't want to spoil the Alum drum for the semi-floating axle, in order to make it suitable for the fully floating. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} | ||
