J.A.J & N.S.1.

Since our last report of 2.3.32, we have now made the engine gears quite up to the standard quality. The gears are now exceptionally good, off charge there is no whine and on charge only a slight whine on the overrun. There are no rattles from the gears and in this respect appear to be better than standard as the low inertia runner often causes quite a lot of trouble in this respect.

10 HOURS DURATION RUN.

We have also carried out a 10 hrs duration run on the unit since our last report and generally speaking engine behaved quite well.

The test was carried out at 3 to 1 & full throttle, the power developed being 171.7 H.P. (Test bed silencer was used). The power remained practically constant throughout the run, the power developed at the start being 171.8 H.P. (17.8 B.M.A.P.), and at the finish 171.7 H.P. (17.7 B.M.A.P.).

The oil temperature was kept at 60°C inlet and showed an average temperature rise of 15°C.

Our chief trouble during the run was with water temperature, it was found necessary to keep a very low temperature in the cooling radiator owing to water boiling at the rear end of cylinder block and head.

The temperature of the water round the front cylinders was absolutely cold throughout the whole run but the temperature at the rear of cylinder block and head frequently reached boiling point.

OIL LEAKAGE.

The present rocker cover packing (C.M.A. thus packing) becomes soft and stretches after contact with oil. There was a very bad oil leak from the rocker cover before the test was finished.
