re:- New Silencer for New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I.

BJ., CWB., with EP. {G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} and Works' officials made a test of the latest form of the proposed new silencer for the New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I chassis at W. on Thursday, 26th November.

A chassis fitted with a Limousine body had a new silencer, and a chassis from the Test Shop was fitted with the present standard. These were driven past the observers, starting from rest at a point about 40 yards distant from them, on top gear, with throttle full down.

The noise made by the car fitted with the new type silencer was altogether less in extent than with the present standard. A strict comparison is impossible because the bodies fitted were so entirely different, but the exhaust of the car with the new pattern silencer was quite inaudible until it had passed the observer, and became quite inaudible again when it was about 60 yards away, whilst the exhaust with the present standard silencer was clearly heard quite 200 yards away.

Under ordinary conditions from the inside of the car, driving or riding, the new type of exhaust was to all intents and purposes inaudible.

It was considered that HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} should take all possible steps to accelerate the standardisation of this exhaust silencer when he had satisfied himself regarding its mechanical strength and the loss of power caused by it, regarding which matter we would wish to have some definite figures.

CWB.
