Development and design of a sequence silent starter for large chassis engines.

We have had in hand for some time quite a promising scheme of starter for our large chassis engine. This has developed and is being completed for the E.A.C.I. and II engines. The motor itself should be well forward, and is all in EFC's hands. The fixing of this motor to the lower half of the crankchamber is just about completed by E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} and also the reduction gear and magnetic device for engaging the pinion, etc. which should be in Derby about the 12th inst. The only serious part to complete the scheme is the design for the main switch and the control circuit breaker. These two will be combined and of a less expensive design than the present main switch, but must naturally be thoroughly reliable. This is the work in hand at WW. It will be fitted on the engine side of the dash so that the contacts will be easily seen. The sequence means that the scheme functions automatically in sequence, then switches off and remains silent without care in the use of the press button, but as it is a flywheel geared starter it has nothing to do with making this gear silent, which must be done by careful cutting etc. but should give silent engagement etc. (i.e. operation). It is a R-R scheme but Robert Bosch has since run very near it in engagement, but not in the disengagement. Their scheme therefore requires careful handling by the operator, which we do not need.
