X7380 DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to BJ. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} R6/M7.4.28. 'SS{S. Smith}' FRONT AXLE AND FRAME. X. 7420 X. 7380 I like the axle .750 lower - i.e. new forging because it will improve the appearance, as the same radiator looks 1" deeper. It is a great pity that we cannot clear the front so that we see the whole depth of the radiator. Anyway we seem to want the axle .750 down but I regret the cost and delay, and that it will not be inter-changeable work with present standard. It has just occurred to me that if we are producing any new designs of front road wheel hub we might like to carry the load with a roller bearing, and use a double row New Departure to take the outer end - i.e. the end load. I should not make the change unless the present occasionally shews itself hardly equal to the load, but I think this idea better than Timken's or conical bearings and their exact end adjustments.
