Test report on a thermostat marked 'A', detailing water temperature readings and a jamming failure which caused the engine to boil.

The car was run with no bonnet, but even then the air temperature was too high for the shutters to close. The shutters were then disconnected from the thermostat, and were fixed in a closed position. The water was boiled. A slight run came from the radiator cap when the water was just ceasing to boil. The water was then below the top of the tubes, seven pints being lost.

Having allowed the water to cool below 50°C, it was found that the thermostat had jammed fully out. This was freed. The water was wrmed up to 60°C. The shutters fully open. Various methods were tried to keep the shutters closed at this temperature, for example hard driving in third gear.

It was found that the loss of water did not effect the action of the thermostat.
