Up to the present after five days, during which a brass tube has been in very hard water taken from a Chellaston pump, there has been practically no action in spite of keeping at a temperature of about 65°C for one third of the time.

As extreme cases, we have also taken .1% Sodium hydrate solution, 1% Sodium Chloride solution and .1% Sodium Carbonate solution, each, as in the hard water test, in the presence of a small piece of mild steel and solder, and we have found that all these three are slightly affected, the greatest effect is with the 1% Sodium Chloride solution, whereas the alkaline solutions do not appear to have anything like the same corrosive action. We are continuing these tests and will report again in about a week.

Hard water is not really alkaline water, and we do not think a truly alkaline town water is likely to be found anywhere in the world.
