X.4289 - COSTS OF ELECTRICAL UNITS.

The question of comparative costs of R.R. production of electrical units and of purchasing units of other makers is being thoroughly gone into between Mr Rodman, Mr. Whitehead and ourselves, and we anticipate sending you items of information in this connection from time to time.

Mr. Rodman has drawn my attention to the cost of the mica plates used as eddy current insulators between the soft iron armature plates of the R.R. starter motor and for the proposed R.R. dynamo made from starter motor parts, pointing out that these plates cost 42/6d. per hundred, which works out at about 29/- per machine, making a small allowance for scrap, or, put in another way, 66 plates at a little over 5d. each are used in each machine.

We therefore propose, subject to Mr. Royce's approval, to have an armature built up in the Experimental Dept. without such plates but using insulating varnish, other things being the same, and making a definite comparison between the efficiency or output in the two cases.

It is also suggested that a comparison be made in efficiency between the use of solid and laminated pole pieces and we have already instructed some solid pole pieces for the Standard R.R. starter motor, to which course we take it Mr. Royce will agree.
