With reference to Mr. Moon's note con- cerning the arrangement of the Side Steering Tube F.2330 and the modifications you instructed to be carried out, I send a print F.4612 embody- ing them. With regard to the round springs in Scheme A, we have kept the same plugs and sliding piece and got as large a diameter wire in the round spring as possible. In scheme B we make a suggestion for altering the plugs slightly and getting in a still larger wire with additional coils. These springs broke very frequently on the bumping test, and a good quantity of metal in them seems desirable. We find that the existing square spring is not up to the strength specified on the draw- ing in a great many cases. This is the spring about which the steering wobbles occur, and if it is very weak it is difficult to correct the steering wobbles even by correcting the lean of the pivots. One such car was shewn me the other day. By strengthening the spring however, the Contd. [Handwritten on left margin]: X45-7 [Printed at bottom right]: 4600/D/E/30 9.12 'A'(405) W&S B'N | ||
