AERO ENGINES.

X3993

In our report Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1/WJ.11.11.32 we omitted to mention one of the most important items as regards the relative performance between our own engines and our competitors, i.e. our engines have a much smaller capacity than any of the others.

In the case of the Siddeley, the original 'Jaguar' engine had a capacity of 1513 cu.ins. About two years ago they brought out an improved addition, the 'Panther' with a capacity of 1667 cu.ins. They have recently brought out another engine the 'Tiger', capacity 1996 cu.ins. They also have the 'Leopard' engine which has a capacity of 2969 cu.ins.

The Bristol Company are at present in production with two engines, the 'Pegasus' capacity 1753 cu.ins., and the 'Mercury' capacity 1519 cu.ins.

We understand that the new Fairey 12 cyl. Vee similar to the Kestrel, will have a larger capacity.

The Curtiss, which we come in competition with for foreign orders their latest 12 cyl. Vee engine has a capacity of 1569 cu.ins.

There are already certain classes of machines which carry a considerable amount of equipment and which demand an engine somewhere between the 'Kestrel' and 'Buzzard'. It would therefore appear necessary in order to safeguard our position that we have got to anticipate an engine somewhat larger than the present 'Kestrel'. It is very probable that this engine would be an addition and not replace the present engine.
