RE BIJUR SYSTEM

We have just had Messrs. Bijur, Thomas, Sturveant and Booth (from England) at the works, and simultaneously received your NA{Mr Nadin}2/W.21.5.28.

SPHERE. As a result of the discussion we sent the following cable:-
" Burton explain Bailey Robotham necessity using collector ring for Bijur lubrication sphere scheme preferred is twentyfour forty two as shown right hand corner. Writing."

Mr. Burton is familiar with every step of this development on MX{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}-2 which ran 18000 miles with complete satisfaction.

The proposal to adopt it was submitted in proposal sheets 83 and 84 (Torque Tube and Sphere.)

From what we gather from Mr. Booth and from your letter it appears that Derby have attempted to lubricate the sphere direct by means of an extra-large drip plug without providing a collector ring for getting the oil to the pins.

The collector ring scheme was laid out by Mr. Day in consultation with Mr. Bijur and myself, a year ago, and is contained in N.Sch. 2442. I also wrote Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} and By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} explaining why we had found it impossible to lubricate the universal joint by oil discharged into the open sphere.

Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}'s scheme for holding the collector ring was so obviously better than our experimental scheme that we held up the Bijuring of the sphere and torque tube until Derby's experimental work was completed.
