c. H1. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Mths.{Reg Matthews}1/MH.{M. Huckerby} 1020 ? 2nd. February 1938. Messrs. Wellworthy Ltd., Lymington, HANTS. For the attention of Mr. John Howlett. Dear Sirs, A.C. Bearing Alloys. With reference to the recent visit of Mr. Howlett to discuss details of Aluminium-tin bearings we give herewith a few notes on our own experience with these alloys, and on work carried out so far with various other manufacturers of motor vehicles. We know from our own experience of these alloys that certain precautions must be taken if the bearings are to give a satisfactory performance and that if these precautions are taken the bearings will continue to work under far more severe conditions than will white-metal. For convenience we are classifying below under their various headings the more important features which apply to these bearings from a fitting and running point of view. Lubrication. We have found that lubrication plays a tremendously important part in successful bearing operation and too great a care cannot be taken in establishing a sufficient oil supply, this particularly applies to bearings for use in high speed high performance engines, where explosion and inertia loads can be very high. | ||
