December 12th. 1914 Re Oil Consumption. Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}/EH1/L101214. Thank you for your memo of December 10th. re oil consumption. It would appear that the Zephyr Pistons are still doing well. To test them fully, they should be tested with the highest pressure and at great speed. You do not in your memo on oil consumption say if, with the same engine as we used .044 lbs of oil per HP hour, the Zephyr pistons made any difference with the extra oil on. You tell us that these pistons with the oil off could run with the full power satisfactorily, and only then consumed .021 lbs per HP hour. This is exceedingly good, but we fear that with a brand new engine the crankshaft bearings may be so tight that the lubrication of the cylinders would be insufficient, and we should prefer if possible, to still use the extra oil dropping on the crankshaft at full power, and we have some little hope that the Zephyr pistons might still show a good consumption with ample oil on the cylinder walls. Kindly, therefore, continue testing in this direction. F.H.R. X857 | ||
