| To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 304 Copy to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Re Continental Touring Saloon - Phantom III. Whilst at Messrs. Park Ward & Co's last week we took the opportunity of discussing with Mr. Ward, confidentially, how much weight would be saved on the body for the Continental Touring Limousine 35-EX if it were rebuilt with lightness in view. We were able to draw up the following items where a saving could be made:- 1) Fixed front screen. 10 lbs. 2) Aero glass for screen, windows and division. 30 " 3) Light leather. 8 " 4) No elbows to front seats. 5 " 5) Light type tubular front seats with Terry Suspension. 10 " 6) Substantial reduction in the amount of body ironing. 20 " 7) Lightened body framework. 15 " 8) Light weight carpet. 5 " 9) Light gauge aluminium running boards with special light covering. 20 " 10) New design of light boot lid{A. J. Lidsey} having support stay to rear bumper. 20 " 11) Blind with Zipp fastener instead of metal lid{A. J. Lidsey} to rear boot. 10 " 12) Special light sunshine roof and fittings. 4 " 13) Light weight framed body floorboards. 5 " 14) Light weight "Quicklift" window lifts. 2 " 15) Rear windows to slide and not lift. 8 " 16) Light weight "Quicklift" to centre division. 4 " 17) Light weight construction to centre elbow. 4 " 18) Light head-cloth. 3 " 19) Light weight sun visors. 2 " 20) Light weight woodwork for dadoes and finishers. 1 " 21) Light weight rear bumper. 1 " 22) Hollow sheet metal door handles. 4 " 23) Special light weight cushions and squabs. 10 " 24) AC stone shields for wings. 5 " This rough estimate meant approximately a saving in weight of 2 Cwts., but there can be quite a lot more saved by a percentage reduction in all of the many small features. | ||
