-2- Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}12/AP.28.9.37 From watching the operation of the Maag or Pratt & Whitney grinders it would appear possible to choose sizes and spiral angles of gears on the layshaft so that they can be ground. It will, however, be impossible to grind the small 1st. speed pinion. The use of an integral side shaft means we must have a noisier first speed than heretofore. The largest reduction of cost appears to depend on this one point. We have mentioned some of these points to Hdy.{William Hardy}, who is not necessarily in agreement with them, but they represent our views on the ways to obtain a cheaper transmission.
