X4354 -3- Contd. B. MECHANICAL TEST OF GOVERNOR. (1) The distributor shall now be fitted up with its rotor and cover, and wired up to a standard Goshawk ignition equipment. ( A disc marked in degrees is fitted to the driving end of the shaft and a spark gap and pointer arranged to show the instantaneous position of the disc at every revolution, by the light of any one of the six sparks from the distributor, intensified by the use of a H.T. condenser in parallel with the spark gap. The remaining five sparks are allowed to discharge at any convenient gaps. The distributor is run up to a high speed and then slowed down until the lowest speed at which the full governor advance as indicated by the disc is found. Then calling this reading 15° the advance-speed characteristic of the governor is found, working downwards. This should lie within the following limits :- Speed. Advance. Min. Max. 15° 1130 1300 12° 870 1040 9° 710 880 6° 550 720 3° 400 560 It is best to start the test with the hand advance fully retarded, taking care that it remains so, in order not to interfere with the governor readings.
