'V' SERIES EXHAUST PIPES. X.8230 X.8050

We send you herewith drawings No.LeC.1956., arrangement of exhaust pipes, shewing the schemes on which we are engaged for 'V' series. We would draw your attention to the alteration to the rear exhaust manifold whereby the exhaust pipe is brought down on the rear side of the engine foot instead of in front of it.

A new place will have to be found for the main switch on the starting system in consequence and we are proposing to put this switch on the engine foot.

To obtain the necessary capacity in the system the rear silencer has been increased in dia. from 6" to 7½". The cutout to be used on this system is one mounted on the rear end of the rear silencer. It is not yet decided which type should be used but Mr. Royce desires both the butterfly type and the flat by valve type to be tested experimentally but has a preference for the former.

As regards the position for the thermometer in the cylinder head we have put this in the side of the head at the same height as before but moved it forward to a position .625 in front of No.5 cyl. centre line, where it just squeezes in between the induction pipe flange and the oil delivery boss for the valve rockers. A slightly modified union is to be used to accomplish this. Full scale drawings for the foregoing are nearing completion and will be forwarded as soon as possible.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
