X4277 Oyd - G 81020 Oct. 8, 1920 Mr. Claude Johnson, Managing Director, Rolls-Royce Ltd., London, England. Attention: Mr. Hives Dear Sir:- Re: Spark Plugs We would like, at Mr. Hives' earliest convenience, to obtain a report on the sixty Silvex spark plugs sent by Mr. Gardner last April. The Silvex plugs are made by the Silvex Company of Bethlehem, Pa. {Mr Paterson} , and other plugs made by this company which we have tried on the demonstration car give promise of excellent results. The plugs are of ordinary single point porcelain type, but they have the following advantages over the A.C. and Champion: 1. Nickel electrodes as recommended by Mr. Hives. 2. A thinner point on the porcelain which soon gets hot enough to burn off accumulated carbon. 3. A long insulating part over the central porcelain. 4. A special type of porcelain which claims great dielectric/mechanical strength as compared with the other American porcelains. They do not claim, however, to be better than the German Bosch pre-war porcelain, which we have considered so good. This firm is making up some multi-point plugs for us with a ring electrode on the lines of the Lodge. We shall have a delivery of these in a week or two, and as soon as we have found that they do not have any obvious defects, we will send a large number to England for tests. MO/G Very truly yours, ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC. Per M. {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} Olley | ||
