57 To WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} X7941 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rml/LGS.1.29. 'SS{S. Smith}' DEVELOPMENT. X7770 The faults which have so far manifested themselves on the 'SS{S. Smith}' are as follows :- ENGINE. We have had reports of oil leaks from the rear engine bearing. We have already dealt with the cause and remedy for this trouble. Engine vibrations are no worse than those of the standard engine - it is only a matter of getting the right compromise of mounting. From our results so far we are quite satisfied that we shall be able to get an engine mounting which will have sufficient elasticity to damp out engine vibrations and yet sufficient rigidity to hold the front end of the frame. We feel optimistic that we shall be able to reduce pick-up vibrations below the present standard with the new engine mounting. We have had signs of pre-ignition on the engine running in France, but this can easily be cured by selecting the right type of sparking plugs. EXHAUST SYSTEM. We have not had time, up to the present, to deal with the exhaust system thoroughly and on the car running in France all parts of it have failed rather badly. We do not anticipate any difficulty in making the exhaust system satisfactory. We think that our troubles have been due mainly to the use of built up tubes for the manifolds instead of solid castings as on previous cars. contd :- | ||
