x8410. OY-1 August 10th, 1929. Mr. R.W.H. Bailey, Mr. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} W. Hives, ✓ Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby, England. Gentlemen: ROAD SPRINGS - SECTION 7020/30 SK-209 shows the general idea of the rig we have made for testing road spring bedding. We made it however for testing two springs at a time side by side, with cranks at 180° to even up the load, and a 24" pulley in the middle, and with ball bearings (line-shaft type) on the crankshaft. We kept 2" stroke and 60 R.P.M. The turnbuckle connecting rods have enough stroke to flatten the spring and the spring is therefore worked 1" either side of flat. There is no need to use spring clips as the load is always upwards. The bracket at the lower end of the connecting rod is simply fitted with four buttons which hold it sideways on the spring. A "shoe" fits between these buttons to adapt the same bracket to the narrower front springs. This rig has been useful from the start in showing up what has to be done to make a well-bedded spring. -continued- | ||
