| x302 Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} To EY. from Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} SECRET. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}1/HP.6.6.35. C. Wep. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hdy.{William Hardy} WMG. SpectreCodename for Phantom III - Rear Axle Gears. It is required to get a rather higher ratio than 4.25 to 1 for SpectreCodename for Phantom III. Herewith is N.Sch. 4519 shewing an outline of the gears of a 9/35 = 3.89 ratio, for ordering with Gleasons. We suggest that they should be asked to design and make this ratio exactly on the lines of the 8/34 they have already done for us. The stresses and loads are rather lower than in that ratio. There is a question of making the inner roller race solid with the pinion. The stresses appear to be quite low with the separate bearing, and a precisely similar bearing, more highly loaded, has done a great deal of very heavy work on Vulture, so that there does not seem any absolute necessity to make the roller race solid. However, we have shewn a solid one on N. Sch.4521 also herewith, and suggest that unless it involves us in any difficulties in manufacture the solid one should be used.
