LES.{Ivan A. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} O.Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Les.{Ivan A. Leslie} 442 HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/WB.{Mr Brazier/Mr Bell}1/EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}19.May,38. File BENTLEY III FRONT DAMPERS. Assembly report, FB.3465 LOP for Bump Chassis. During the assembly of these dampers no consideration was given to "finish", other than on essential dimensions. In the following report each section of the damper is considered separately, and the possibility of facilitating production of this type of damper kept in view. Main Casing FB.3315 - I/C. The spreading of the securing bolt bosses so that they could be spot faced instead of as at present, milled, of course involves modification to the frame drilling, but would effect a saving on the machining time on the casing. Aluminium plugs were called for for plugging up the outer ends of the oil passages, but in this instance at Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Les.{Ivan A. Leslie} request one damper(O.S) was fitted with 'A' plugs, and the other(N.S) with S/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} plugs so that their respective merits could be observed. In this connection it should be noted that with 'A' plugs there is a danger of screwing them in too far, consequently fouling(in one instance) the valve assembly, but there is less danger of damage to the casing and also they are easier to peen over than S/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} plugs. The disadvantage of 'A' plugs is possible leakage due to alternate expansion and contraction due to temperature variation. The main bearing bushes FB.3434/5 have common dimensions except in respect of the bores, and it is possible to fit them into the wrong bore in the casing. If the main levers were straight this would not affect assembly, but cannot be permitted with the existing curved levers. continued | ||
