air. Immerse the pump half way in hot or [strikethrough]near[/strikethrough] boiling water. When the oil temperature has reached 70°C remove the pump, and tilt backwards until it rests on the pedal, in which position it should be supported for 15 mins. Theoretically when tilted at this angle, i.e. 60°, oil should flow out of an imperfect top seal. A comparison of a good and bad pump (as proved on the road) should establish the time elements at which oil is seen emerging from the pedal slots, and hence a means for determining a pass-or-failure test.

If this suggestion does not prove adequate we should appreciate the loan of a faulty pump to determine some other means for proving oil leaks.

With regard to the question of oil leaking through the two studs, we are inclined to agree that deletion of the grover washer and the fitting of a cap nut would be beneficial. At the same time we have heard of the 2 BA nuts on these studs being loose when the pump has been returned to Works for leaks from the flange facing. We should like MX.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} to satisfy himself that these do not work loose through vibration, before approving the proposed alteration, as the leak in question has so far only been obtained statically.

The position then is this. We think cars tested to the above suggestions and proved satisfactory cannot be held up for any further modification to the pump to counteract oil leaks. Should we discover a means whereby such leaks are prevented under every possible condition and in the hands
