An inspection of the wheels and hubs was made with the following results -
OFFSIDE FRONT WHEEL. First tried by hammering up locknut and found to be "not tight". There was no rock or shake before tightening. Shell would not easily take the "GO" serration gauge. Wheel greased and put back "Hammer tight".
OFFSIDE REAR WHEEL. Could not rock or shake it. Nut not very tight. Inner Hub shows cone seating on top diameter first but too much so. Cone was "galled" locally. Shell only takes "GO" gauge with difficulty. Cleaned with paraffin, greased and put back "Hammer tight".
NEARSIDE FRONT WHEEL. Same as offside front, but cone of wheel was bearing on nearly 3/4 of cone of hub.
NEARSIDE REAR WHEEL. Same as offside rear. When wheel was refitted locknut was left finger tight, and marked against the shell. 12 miles were covered and it was found that nut had gone up 7/8" on periphery of locknut. It was then hammered up and found to go up a total of 3" from the finger tight position. Nut again taken off and put back with different serrations engaging. From finger tight position to hammer tight, the locknut had to move only 2" at its periphery. It was left like this and Mr. Maddox took the Car away.
General impression of Mr. Maddox (and also our own impression) was that all wheels and hubs were in excellent condition.
