PERFORMANCE TESTS ON 'F' ENGINES IN 3F. XZ810
MACHINES AT FARNBOROUGH.

Last week I visited the R.A.E. Farnborough to talk over the results obtained on the 6/1 and 7/1 comp. ratio F.{Mr Friese} engines which they are testing in Fairey 3F. aeroplanes.

As the results of these tests will be regarded as representative of the above type engines we were anxious to satisfy ourselves and be in agreement with the RAE., that such results as obtained were truly representative and not masked in any way by possible engine pecularities.

While it is probably a little outside our sphere to criticise aeroplane performance we are able, from the engine point of view, to make comparison between the 6/1 and 7/1 engines to see that the results obtained are as we should estimate from the known test bed performance of these engines.

We were also able to obtain some figures for the Napier Lion 10.A. which was an experimental model, but as both speed and power are higher we are not able to make a fair comparison with our F.{Mr Friese} engines. The figures however are given as a point of interest.

On an appended print is given the full throttle consumptions at altitudes of 6000 ft. and 15,000 ft. when using the best amount of mixture control - i.e. the max. a.c. without losing r.p.m. - in other words our 'weakest maintained' figure.

We have the full throttle test bench power figures
