Contd. -2- Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}7/T13.6.32. (4) A chimney type filler cap was used, as used on the Austrian Trials Cars. We tried various means of making comparative tests. One condition was that the car was run on the dynamometer at full power at 1000 revs. the HP., petrol consumed and timing was kept constant for every test. The water was levelled up in the radiator for each test. We then ran the car for 5 minutes with the water boiling. We took four tests under each condition and averaged the results. We found with the standard car that under these conditions of boiling we lost on an average 4½ pints of water. Half of this was collected as water from the overflow in the radiator, the other half went away in steam. The worst condition was with the large diameter top water pipe. With this under similar conditions, we collected three pints of water and lost 3¼ in steam, making a total of 6¼ pints. The best arrangement was the chimney filler cap with which we lost 1¼ pints of water and 2¼ as steam. This shows a slight improvement over the standard, but not sufficient to warrant any change. During the test it was noticed that it is possible to lose a considerable amount of water in steam. It all depends to what degree the water is boiling, for instance, on the Goshawk we can boil away in steam 26 pints of water in Contd. | ||
