BRAKES.

As you will note in the Daily Report, the front brakes came to the end of their adjustment (39 notches) during yesterday's running. There was plenty of lining left, and well clear off the rivets so we have let out the toggles 4 turns each, which has given us 20 notches adjustment to go on with.

The drums were both rumbled like the iron drums removed from 6.B.IV. with black patches and cracks all round. The cracks are worse than those on 6.B.IV. except that none have actually run right across the rubbing surface. The drivers had reported slight rumbles similar to those experienced on the Bentley.

We shall be able to finish out the mileage on the present linings, for even if we do get down to the rivets, it will not matter as the drums are scrap anyway.

We removed the nearside rear drum for inspection. This had hard bright patches and a black deposit all round the rubbing surface, and very fine incipient cracks.

The oil collector is bad as it unfortunately collects the oil on the wrong side and feeds it towards the brake shoes instead of the drain hole. Only a small quantity of oil had escaped from the hub and had not reached as far as the linings.

The adjustment used up on the rear brakes is, 16 notches on the nearside and 15 notches on the offside out of a total of 36 notches.
