S. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Grylls Esq.,
Messrs Rolls Royce Limited,
DERBY.
Dear Mr. Grylls,
Further to your request for information regarding the results given by Hypoid Gear Lubricants in Extreme Pressure Testing Machines, with and without sulphur, we have now received a report from our Laboratory in connection with test on a Cornell Machine.
Strictly speaking this type of machine, like most others, is unsuitable for testing Hypoid Gear Lubricants, as the results are not directly comparable with practice.
As a guide, however, the following were the results.
GARGOYLE HYPOID GEAR LUBRICANT as normally manufactured carried a load of 1500 lbs for 27 minutes, during which the wear amounted to 200 notches.
The same type of lubricant, but excluding sulphur, broke down immediately the 1500 lbs load was applied.
Our standard MOBILOIL EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}, in the same machine, and under the same conditions, will carry a load of 1500 lbs per square inch for one hour without difficulty, and with a wear of approximately 40 notches.
The same grade, excluding sulphur, carried in the same machine a load of 1500 lbs for 40 minutes, and the amount of wear was 200 notches.
UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE ALL OILS ARE QUOTED AND INVOICED PER UNIT GALLON OF 9 LBS AND ALL QUOTATIONS ARE WITHOUT ENGAGEMENT.
