G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} V.{VIENNA} Further to your telegram of the 26th inst., we have examined the Big-end and Main Bearings on 22.G.V.before continuing the running on Mobiloil "Arctic". This was done over the week-end at the Paris Depot while waiting for the return of Sr's Bentley which went away for the week-end and which we have not quite completed. The Big-end bearings were found to be in an excellent condition. The bedding in each case extending over the whole bearing surface, with the exception of Nos. 2 and 4 bearings which showed a bedding more towards the centre, but in no case showed any sign of disintegration or deterioration. The Crankshaft pins were found to be smooth and free from scores. The Main bearings were in a poor condition throughout. Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6, showed signs that the white metal had partially run and a considerable number of loose particles were found on the bearing surfaces. In the case of Nos. 4, and 6 intermediate bearings, the metal had run into the oil grooves and formed a restriction. The surfaces of Nos. 1, and 7 main bearings although free from loose particles, appeared to have a mottled finish, definitely showing signs of disintegration. The crankshaft pins were again found to be smooth and free from scores. We have kept a record of each bearing for future reference. We also found a fair quantity of oil sludge in the crankcase filter and a thick layer on the surface of the crankshaft webs. The crankshaft was completely drained of oil and the engine cleaned out as far as possible. We have refilled with Mobiloil "Arctic", and will continue running as soon as we can. ---------- GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}/HFH.{Hoppy F.
