X.4285 U.S.A. BOSCH MAGNETO TYPE D.U.Z.6.

Report on Experimental Bench Tests.

Two of the above magnetos were received at these works from America, having been brought over by Mr. Hives. on his return.
A short preliminary report was sent under cover of our EFC {E. Fowler Clarke - Electrical Engineer} 6/T15.4.21. Mention was made in that report of the fact that the method of lubricating the distributor gear wheel bearing in the Z.R.6 was absent from this machine. Later in going through its experimental tests it failed on the short endurance test (see test No.7 below) on account of this bearing. Also we have a communication to hand, Cy2/G4.3.21 which confirms and explains our experience. This is to the effect that the D.U.Z.6 magneto was fitted with an oilless bushing in the distributor spindle, but the American Bosch Co. having their doubt about it, have cancelled it in favour of the method used on the Z.R.6. The armature bearings, however, are still not provided with oilways.
This magneto has now been put through our experimental bench tests with the following results :-
Magneto No.3363370.
(1) Weight 14.4 lbs. This is less than that of the U.S.A. Bosch Z.R.6 by .7 lb.
