PHANTOM III CLUTCH.
re fitting Long Type Plate.

Some doubt has existed as to whether or not it is necessary to fit a packing ring between the flywheel and the clutch cover when fitting a Long type plate to customer's cars.

The answer is that in the majority of cases, the packing ring is not necessary, but in a few isolated cases, the pressure plate may be exceptionally thick in dimension B, in which case the packing ring C.84703 may be necessary.

In order to determine whether or not the ring is necessary, proceed as follows :-

(1) Remove the 12 thrust springs.

(2) Mount the pressure plate in the clutch cover, making sure that it is pressed in as far as it will go, and that the finger levers will contact freely with the cover at C, (this is to insure that the levers are not holding up the pressure plate).

(3) Measure the dimension A, from face of cover to face of pressure plate.

If this dimension exceeds .675, a packing ring is quite unnecessary, but if it is less than .675, the ring C.84703 should be fitted.

The object of this note is to avoid the extra cost of fitting the packing ring to the large majority of clutches in which it is not required, but it will be advisable for depots to have a few rings available for the isolated cases where they are required.
