40/50 HP. CHASSIS FOR AUSTRALIA.

Referring to Sgl2/FP.{F. Potts} 16.4.25. we understand that no further "U" Series chassis are being despatched to Australia and therefore the only cooling problem we have to consider is that in connection with "V" Series.

No proposals are at present in existence to modify either the compression of the engine or the speed of the fan on EAC. for use in Switzerland or Australia.

The only modification which at the moment I feel at liberty to include, would be to include a louvred bonnet in place of the plain bonnet with sliding shutters.

The EAC. unit is better for cooling than the standard 40/50, but the improvement is not a large one. It amounts to this, that the car can operate in a temperature 5o higher for atmospheric conditions, without boiling, than could the 40/50.

This is a real improvement, but not of such magnitude as to make it possible to guarentee that we shall not boil under conditions like those which have been imposed on the "U" Series chassis in Australia by Dalgetys and our own people.

We might just get through such conditions, but that is all.

Our conclusions were that the arrangements made for cooling the engine were the best compromise that Mr.Royce knew of, it being admitted that we cannot carry a radiator sufficiently large to prevent boiling under extreme conditions, and that therefore, since we could not eradicate the possibility of boiling, we had gone as far in the direction of radiator surface, fan area and a proposal to louvre the bonnet, as would make us at least better than the best 40/50 conditions we know of at present.
