INSTRUMENT BOARD FOR L.H.S.S.

We thank you for your BY6/G.8.5.30. re the above.
You state that the minutes of the Conference in Derby tell us all that we should want to know. We presume that you refer to the conference of the 10th. of April Last.
Your letter says that it was agreed at the conference that the instruments were to be American. We would refer you to page 18 of the minutes and the only conference to this subject, which says very little definitely, but it does say:-
"OY. stated the speedometer would be supplied by America"
"but the smaller instruments he would like Englad to Supply."
We agree that the minutes state that OY. had ordered a sample set of instruments from America for our inspection with a view to considering points in which they might be deemed better than our own. We do not see it stated that this set of instruments would be fitted to the second L.H. Expl. Phantom 2.
Again we agree that last February we received a large parcel of several hundreds of drawings of R.R.A.I. parts amongst which were some prints of American instruments, but it is not stated in any previous correspondence or in the minutes that these drawings which left America last December will agree with the sample set of instruments when they do arrive.

We make the following comments on the American instruments as shown in the prints we have now found.
(a) The thermometer has no electrical connections for the operation of the red warning lamp. We think that we shall still need this with thermostatically operated shutters to give warning when the shutters have become stuck closed.
(b) The K-S Petrol Gauge has no balance pipe and no pump.
(c) The fixing and wiring of the instruments is not up to R-R standard. The clock will possibly be for 6.volts.

We would suggest the following arrangement.

America to supply:-
(a) The speedometer, because they need one of a special type and this we believe is not part of the chassis.
(b) The clock, because it also is an extra. If it must be an electrically operated clock we should have great difficulty in getting "Rs{Sir Henry Royce's Secretary}" approval of any such clock but if we do not supply over here the question does not arise.

England to supply:-
Petrol gauge. Ammeter. Oil Gauge. Thermometer, Red Lamp Main Switch, Starter Switch and Mag. Testing Switch.
These are all needed for testing the chassis over here and in most cases have been made specially toucour own specification and are part of the standard chassis.
