MERLIN 'E' ENGINE.

Please receive herewith two blueprints of the following:-

DES.2794 - Modifications to Sparking Plug Connections and Housing - Inlet side.

The required particulars are shown on the above for completing the sleeve nut for the inlet side sparking plug to DES 2770.

Two alternative cable ends are shewn which require an individual sleeve nut length.

It is only necessary at present to detail the one to suit the cable end to drawing EL 280. Should the alternative cable end be required, the nuts may be converted to suit by machining the necessary amount of metal from the end face.

The Experimental Dept. report that the projecting portion of the plug housing obstructs the final machining of the cylinder head. The latter being only partly machined, because of the resulting distortion, when heated for the insertion of the adaptors. The extension is therefore made separate and is to be pressed into position after final machining.

This scheme entails a slight pattern alteration to the boss on the cylinder head. Existing castings may, however, be used up.

Will RHC. {R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} please produce a single model of the fitting and if necessary develop in conjunction with this Dept.

Should this type of terminal prove satisfactory it will be introduced on production engines, but with slight dimensional changes to suit the proposed standard plug of which we have not received particulars.

Until the standard plugs are available it is proposed to use up the existing plugs of this type using terminals as shown on this scheme.

Please detail and instruct the required parts.

Att: DES.2794.
