PHANTOM III CRANKSHAFTS. ?

In reply to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}4/MH.{M. Huckerby}1.3.38. we would confirm that all crankshaft forgings,E.86615, are now delivered for Phantom III. 'D' series.

The cost of milling away the balance weights on the above forgings would be sufficient to cancel out the saving provided by the more simple machining of the Packard type shaft,E.88364, and it would, therefore, not be economical to introduce this design until new forgings are available, i,e, 1st chassis in 'E' series.

The Packard type shaft,as previously stated offers a saving of £4.2.6d. per chassis but involves a combined tool and die cost of £795.0.0d. hence the saving would not become operative until the 1st chassis in "F" series.
