No.4: This brg. failed. Very little brg. metal left No.5: Good, but showing incipient peeling No.6: As No.1 T.H. Row: Cap No.1: As above but with small piece broken away No.2: Good but with slight pitting No.3: As No.1 Cap No.4: - No.5: Good No.6: Good The failure of No.4 big end was most probably due to loss of oil following partial failure of Nos. 4 & 5 main bearings. Crankshaft. No.4 crank pin was badly grooved and the shaft is scrap. Crankcase. The was chalk tested and found to be free from cracks. Pistons. In good condition. Valve Gear. The outer rim of No.2 inlet valve spring top washer had sheared off over most of the circumference (see accompanying photograph). The rollers of Nos. 1 & 8 bottom tappets were pitted slightly.
