distribution board with Smith cut-out, and put it in Mr. Day's hands to design on similar lines to the present R.R. experimental distribution board, if this course is agreeable.

(b) (Earthed). In the case of the earthed system, the diagram (not drawn) would be similar to (2), but the functions of the Lucas junction box and of the distribution board and Smith cut-out would be combined into one unit, this being now feasible without making the unit too large, owing to the smaller number of connections required. We understand from your telegram that this arrangement is alternative to that one intended in the two arrangements mentioned in (2) above. Perhaps you would kindly let us know with which of the two alternatives, earthed or non-earthed, we should proceed. We, at this end, recommend at the moment, that with the non-earthed wiring system should be proceeded with as being the nearest to materialization, and in that case, the decision asked for in (a) above, is required.

There is also the possibility in each of the three above mentioned arrangements of using the Smith cut-out as a separate unit, thus reducing the size of the board in each case. I take it from your telegram that you wish to have the Smith cut-out, in spite of its bulk, built in as part of the board. We at Derby do not favour doing this as we feel that it means a bigger delay in the materialization
