R.R. 493A (40 H) (SL 42 12-7-23). J.H., D.{John DeLooze - Company Secretary} EXPERIMENTAL REPORT. Expl. No. 9940 REF: Hsl/1/G23.2.24. SECRET BRAKES. To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to C.J. RG.{Mr Rowledge} c. to DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to EY. NOR. We have now had considerable experience on the front brakes on the 40/50 HP. car and the following are points which we suggest need attention. (1) At present there is no protection from dirt, nor any means of lubrication on the ball joints on the vertical brake rods. There is not sufficient clearance between the top joint and the brake cover to fit a leather guard. The only means we know of for protecting these joints would be to fix a leather cover. (2) We recommend that the lubrication to the out board bearing of the toggle operated shaft should be stopped off and we should use a similar bush as we have on the 20 HP. We also consider some protection should be made to prevent any excess oil given to the toggle shaft bearing, getting on to the brake. We think it is possible to fit a guard at the back of this bearing and arrange a drain hole through the brake carrier bracket so that any excess oil runs outside instead of getting down on to the brake. We consider this an important point. (3) We recommend the dust covers are made in two halves and fixed on by means of screws. This allows the brake to be examined and cleaned without dismantling. contd:- | ||
