Contd. -4 E1/G8.10.20. and displacements per ton mile are. Mr. Hives should send to West WitteringHenry Royce's home town blue prints of charts shewing power required to climb hills of various gradient. Mr. Royce thought that the crown wheel on our new axles should not be less than 13" in diameter for the larger ratios. The present Buzzard axle should be allowed to go on as started, but it should be kept in mind that we want 1" on the big wheel for covered cars. BUZZARD FRONT AXLE. X.4045/6. This should be as 40/50 H.P. for wire wheels, not Michelin with the exception that the front springs may be wider, as specified on the LeC. drawing dealing with this part. BUZZARD GEARBOX. X.3826. Regarding the question of having four speeds. Mr. Royce thinks we should go ahead and make a three speed on the lines of the Goshawk model and do the four speed later on when we have time. The first speed on the three speed box should be made low enough for an emergency gear to enable the car to climb out of awkward places, and with best back axle ratios carry the full load up 1 in 4 = 25% grade. [Handwritten notes in right margin: 3 or 4, *, Royce] BUZZARD CHASSIS. X.3786. The position of the Buzzard chassis as regards progress was gone into, and Mr. Royce said he thought Mr. Day should deal with the whole of the rear of the chassis, the front axle, and front springs, and the steering box and dash, the remainder had been fo was being dealt with at West WitteringHenry Royce's home town. ARMOURED CARS. X.4195. Impulse Starter Versus Hand Magneto. Regarding the above point Mr. Royce stated that the War Department could have whichever they liked, but that he advised the hand magneto. He thought our policy should be to demonstrate starting by each method to them on a car, and then placing our advice before them, let them decide. The hand magneto is what we have used for a long time on aero work, and it does not interfere with the reliability of the main magneto. It was decided that Mr. Royce's advice should in all cases be definitely communicated to the persons responsible for departure from our standard practice. AIR PUMP FOR TYRES. X.4197. The question of fitting an efficient tyre pump is somewhat complicated by the contract conditions for the Contd. | ||
